Since 2015, the SJTUSM–91ɫ Summer School has stood as a model of cross-cultural collaboration and innovation in global medical education. Held each July in Ottawa, this month-long program has welcomed more than 300 students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM). Participants explore subjects such as psychology, anthropology, and medical ethics, while immersing themselves in Canadian culture, language, and healthcare systems.
The initiative grew from the Ottawa–Shanghai Joint School of Medicine (OSJSM), launched in 2014 as the first Sino-Canadian medical program of its kind. Together, the institutions continue to promote global learning, intercultural understanding, and shared progress in medical education.
“This summer school is not just about academics. It’s a journey of mutual understanding and discovery.”

“This summer school is not just about academics. It’s a journey of mutual understanding and discovery,” said Dr. Mark Walker, Vice-Dean of Internationalization and Global Health at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, at the anniversary celebration. “These shared experiences prepare learners for a connected world where collaboration and empathy matter as much as clinical skill.”
For many, the experience has been transformative. One graduate called it “a treasure of our lives,” reflecting the personal and professional growth it inspires.
The 10th anniversary was celebrated alongside this year’s certificate ceremony, with remarks from leaders of both institutions. Speakers highlighted the program’s evolution into a bridge between cultures, institutions, and future healthcare leaders.
